What Can You Put in a Roll-Off Dumpster? A Heber Valley Guide

Before your bin arrives, it helps to know what can go in a dumpster and what has to go somewhere else. Most household junk, remodel debris and yard waste is fine. A short list of items is not allowed because landfills and transfer stations can’t take them, or they are dangerous to haul. Here is a plain guide for projects in Heber City, Midway, Park City and the rest of the Wasatch Back.

What Can Go in a Dumpster

These are accepted in a standard roll-off bin from Old West Waste Solutions:

  • Construction and demolition debris, such as drywall, lumber, cabinets and flooring.
  • Household junk and furniture, such as couches, mattresses, tables and boxes.
  • Roofing materials, such as shingles, underlayment and flashing.
  • Yard waste and landscaping debris, such as branches, brush, sod and old plants.
  • Remodel and cleanout material from kitchens, baths, basements and garages.

What Can’t Go in a Dumpster

These items are not accepted, so plan another way to get rid of them:

  • Hazardous materials and chemicals, including pesticides, pool chemicals and solvents.
  • Paint, oil and fuel.
  • Batteries and electronics.
  • Tires.
  • Appliances with refrigerant, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.

If you are unsure about an item, call before you toss it. Removing a banned item after the bin is full is much harder than leaving it out.

Items to Ask About First

Some materials are allowed, but only with planning:

  • Concrete, dirt and rock are very heavy. A bin filled with them can be too heavy to haul safely, so we plan the load with you before delivery.
  • Large tree trunks and stumps take up space unevenly and can be heavy. Tell us the size first.
  • Mixed loads, such as roofing plus household junk, are usually fine, but let us know when you request a quote.

Where the Banned Items Can Go

Many of the items above still have a local drop-off. For example, the Wasatch County Transfer Station takes metal and oil for recycling at no charge. It also accepts refrigerators and freezers only after the refrigerant has been drained and tagged by a certified technician. Check the county’s current rules and hours before you go, because they can change.

Tips for Loading Your Bin

  1. Load heavy, flat items first, then fill gaps with smaller debris.
  2. Break down furniture and boxes so they lie flat.
  3. Keep debris below the top edge of the bin, because overfilled bins can’t be hauled safely.
  4. Spread weight evenly from front to back.
  5. Keep the area around the bin clear so our truck can reach it.
